Massage therapists incorporate energy healing techniques into their practices. (Photo by Yuri Arcurs)
Learn about four common energy healing techniques in massage therapy that massage therapists incorporate into their practices.
While massage is a hands-on technique focused on working directly with your muscles and other soft tissue, some massage therapists also incorporate energy healing techniques into their massage therapy practice.
Energy healing is based on the belief that promoting the flow of energy in your body helps your body balance and heal itself. Although Western medicine has been slow to recognize the value of energy healing, some research does increasingly support benefits from energy techniques.
Many energy healing techniques are associated with massage therapy, including Touch for Health, Quantum-Touch, Jin Shin Jyutsu, chakra balancing and ThetaHealing. However, the four most common energy healing techniques are Reiki, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch and Polarity Therapy.
Reiki
Developed in Japan and introduced in the United States in the 1930s, Reiki is probably the most common energy technique that massage therapists use. The goal of Reiki is to add energy from the universe to your energy, not to manipulate or move around your energy. However, you must also be willing to receive this energy, or the therapist cannot transfer it to you.
Typically, therapists perform this energy transfer with a standard sequence of hand placements over your body's major energy centers and organ systems, often staying in each position for three to five minutes. However, there are different styles of Reiki and details of their application vary.
Not everyone reports that they feel energy. Those who do may feel warmth, mild tingling or a pulsing or throbbing sensation. Some people have said to have experienced mental or emotional sensations, such as calmness or peacefulness. Most people find Reiki deeply relaxing.
Healing Touch and Therapeutic Touch

Both Healing Touch and Therapeutic Touch were developed by nurses in the United States. Details of the two techniques vary, but they both emphasize compassion and balancing of the body's energy to restore harmony and promote self-healing.
The nurses designed these techniques to help their patients recover and then began teaching the techniques to other people. Practitioners use their hands, either close to or lightly touching your body, to clear energy blockages and promote self-healing.

Polarity therapy
Polarity Therapy, developed by U.S. osteopath Randolph Stone in the mid-20th century, is much more involved than the other three. While Polarity Therapy also uses touch to balance energy, that touch may be the light touch of other energy healing techniques or may also include deeper massage techniques.
Polarity Therapy also includes movement (gentle yoga-like stretching), nutrition and verbal support aimed at helping you develop positive attitudes that support the flow of energy.
Some massage therapists offer specific energy healing sessions, although a common practice is to incorporate energy techniques into a massage session. Not all massage therapists work specifically with energy and not all people want to receive energy work. If you have a strong preference either for or against energy healing, ask potential massage therapists if they include energy work as part of the massage.

Authentic qi gong as practiced in the Shaolin Temple where this discipline originated centuries ago • Reveals the fundamental spiritual principles and includes both a short and long form of the daily exercises • Explains the benefits of mastering energy in the body, such as organ strengthening The great teacher Bodhidharma is credited with the creation of Shaolin Temple qi gong and kung fu in the 6th century CE. Motivated by the terrible physical condition of the monks who spent all their time meditating or copying scrolls, his two-part system promoted physical as well as spiritual fitness and became the basis for all the martial and meditative arts taught in the Shaolin Temple. These ancient practices increase physical health and vitality, enhance creativity, and can be practiced well into old age. Author Shi Xinggui, a Shaolin monk, explains the fundamental principle of qi gong--the art of mastering energy (qi) and moving it through the body--and provides clear demonstrations of all the positions and movements. In order to develop qi attentively, it is necessary to cultivate the art of slowness in both movement and breathwork. Shi Xinggui provides both a short form and a long form of the daily exercises, with lessons on heart centering, organ strengthening, and balancing the energy using the three dantians--the three energy centers of the body.

Qigong (pronounced 'chee-gong') is an ancient Chinese health-care modality that has fascinated people throughout the millennia. Based on the fundamental principles of traditional Chinese medicine, Qigong is a system that teaches us to understand Qi, our bioelectric life force, and use it to heal ourselves and others. Qigong: Essence of the Healing Dance will give readers some of the basics of the outward 'exercises' that are normally associated with the practice of Qigong, as well as detailing movements from such systems as Wuji Qigong, Bagua Xun Dao Gong and Shaolin Qigong. More than merely outlining these practices, this book will take readers on a journey of exploration into the essence of this fascinating, though little understood, healing practice. Masters from around the world—such as the ninety-two-year-old Duan Zhi Liang of Beijing, Canadian healer Effie Poy Yew Chow and American Jerry Johnson—contribute their personal insights into the wonders of Qigong. People from various walks of life, all of whom have achieved healing as a result of practicing Qigong, share their powerful experiences. Author Garri Garripoli, himself a practitioner of Qigong for the past twenty years, renders the book fascinating yet easy-to-read. He expertly guides readers on this once-in-a-lifetime journey, inspiring them to look deeper into healing in order to discover how to move beyond the standards and limitations of Western medicine. Qigong: Essence of the Healing Dance shows readers that we all carry within ourselves the ability to heal, and encourages them to tap into that innate gift and dance their own dance of life. Readers are sure to find this book fascinating, even life changing. It is a must-read for anyone intrigued by the mystique of ancient Eastern healing arts or seeking a daily practice that promotes and maintains full-body well-being.

Qigong is rooted in Chinese philosophy and medicine, and it utilizes breathing, movement, and awareness exercises to promote healing and aid in meditation. In The Qigong Workbook for Anxiety, world-renowned and respected qigong master Kam Chuen Lam presents the first workbook for overcoming anxiety problems utilizing traditional Chinese energy-focusing exercises. By following these simple and accessible step-by-step exercises, readers will learn to transform feelings of anxiety into resilience and inner strength. The workbook also contains helpful illustrations to help you carry out these exercises. In the book, Lam will help you think about anxiety, and yourself, in a different way—as a whole.
